The Story (so far)
Em is the story of a man whose unreasonable affair with the happenings of a kitchen became an inescapable pursuit. Lucho Martinez traces his origin as a chef to the encounter between an unforgiving kitchen and his loud internal reality. Born in Veracruz, Lucho's journey took him from the coastal warmth of his hometown to the bustling streets of Nashville, and then back to Mexico where he delved deep into the world of gastronomy. His journey was marked by the influence of those who encouraged without restraint. His wife, Fernanda, a beacon of strength and clarity, joining him through every wonderful and terrible challenge. His mentor and friend, Lalo Garcia, along with Lalo’s wife Gabriela, whose wisdom, guidance, and grace were invaluable. Named after his daughter, Em is a testament to his unique approach to character, perspective, and community. In every dish, Lucho's creativity opens a path to the possibilities that arise from an unwavering commitment with our own peculiar ways.
By the time Em opened its doors, my unreasonable affair with the happenings of a kitchen had become an inescapable pursuit. I was broke and broken. I was hunting for place and half the time I was happening elsewhere. I encountered an unforgiving kitchen with a fascination that made me urgent. A strange inner reality, the most honest battle with what makes up a true life. Unable - or uninterested - to match the rhythm of a world that named me too fast. In the middle of the disarray between pain and promise I built alliances with my impatience and my indiscretions until the possibility of discovery broke in. A girl. Full of life. My girl. Strange, the end of all self-importance. I have only been able to meet the world during a long night. Back then, I used to think I was running out of time. Now, Emilia shows me how to make time try to catch me. The pursuit of importance is the fastest way to oblivion...so I will be forever starting out. LM
Befriend what is strange inside of you and give it shape. Over the last decade, my shape has been the kitchen... ...ask me again in a few years.
